About This Neighborhood

History of College Green

College Green is one of Elgin's most beloved established communities, developed primarily through the 1980s and 1990s along the northwest side of the city near the Randall Road corridor. The neighborhood takes its name from its proximity to Elgin Community College, whose campus sits just minutes away and adds a vibrant, youthful energy to the surrounding area.

The subdivision was built in multiple phases by several of the region's premier home builders of the era, which is why you'll find a pleasing variety of architectural styles — from classic colonials and traditional two-stories to split-levels and ranch homes — all coexisting on generously sized lots that are noticeably larger than what was being built in the same decade elsewhere in the suburbs.

"College Green has always been one of those neighborhoods where people come for the price and stay for the community. Neighbors know each other's names here — that's rare."

The neighborhood's mature tree canopy — now 30–40 years old — gives every street a beautiful, established feel that newer subdivisions simply cannot replicate. Many original owners have stayed and invested heavily in their homes over the decades, meaning buyers today often find updated kitchens, finished basements, and refreshed landscaping throughout.

Today, College Green strikes the perfect balance between affordability and lifestyle. It draws a mix of first-time buyers attracted by the price points, growing families drawn to the school options, and empty-nesters who appreciate the walkable streets and easy access to everything Elgin and the Randall Road corridor have to offer.
